The season of Advent is an opportunity for Christians to intentionally slow down in the midst of a hectic holiday season. Originally, the focus of Advent was the hopeful anticipation of Jesus's glorious return. Over the years, Advent also became a time during which Christians prepare their hearts for the joy of Christmas. During Advent, we identify with ancient Israel longing for her Messiah as we too look forward with hopeful anticipation to the return of our King.

There are many different traditions associated with Advent, and different Christians celebrate the season in different ways, but the single thread that unifies them all is an emphasis on prayer and repentance as we await the coming of our Lord.

This year, Advent begins on Sunday, December 2, and ends with Christmas Eve on December 24.
